In Singapore you can book belly dance in five main styles: traditional Egyptian, Lebanese style, traditional Middle Eastern, fusion, and LED. The traditional styles suit weddings, cultural events and themed parties. Fusion and LED suit modern parties, brand events and younger crowds. All of them can be danced solo, as a pair or as a troupe.
Cost: the style matters less to the price than the number of dancers, the length and the props. See belly dancer prices in Singapore.
Oriental dance and belly dance
Oriental dance, raqs sharqi in Arabic, is the same dance people call belly dance. It comes from Middle Eastern and North African cultures and is built on movements of the hips and torso with expressive arms and hands. When a search says "oriental dance" or "Arabic dance", this is the dance it means.
Traditional Egyptian style
Egyptian style is the classic picture of belly dance: a jewelled costume, controlled and elegant movement, and classic Arabic music. It is a good choice for a wedding, a formal dinner or any event where you want a sense of tradition.
Lebanese style
Lebanese style is another traditional style, with its own music and its own way of moving. It suits weddings and parties with guests from the Middle East. Ask to see videos of each style side by side if you are unsure which one you prefer.
Fusion belly dance
Fusion takes belly dance and mixes it with other dance styles: Latin, Bollywood or contemporary. The music is more modern, and the show fits a party with a DJ, a mixed crowd or a brand event. A fusion show is also an easy way to bring a Middle Eastern touch to an event without a full theme.
LED belly dance
For an event at night or in a dark ballroom, an LED belly dancer wears an illuminated costume and uses lit props such as LED wings. It looks modern and it photographs well, so it suits product launches, countdown parties and the finale of a company dinner. See props and show ideas.
How to choose
- Look at the guests. A traditional crowd enjoys a classic show. A younger or mixed crowd often prefers fusion.
- Look at the room. A dark ballroom is made for LED. A bright garden at lunch is not.
- Look at the theme. An Arabian Nights or Moroccan theme calls for a traditional style with Arabic music.
- Watch first. Ask for videos of the dancers who are free on your date, and watch our videos.
